LEE National Identity at a Crossroads The issue of national identity was almost nonexistent throughout the period of Hong Kong’s colonial history. According to Lee and Constas’ (1996: 37 Á 41) study of civic education in Hong Kong (as a part of the IEA Civic Education Study 1995Á 2001), they found that national identity was almost unmentioned in textbooks of civics-related subjects such as Economic and Public Affairs and Social Studies.
