Teachers’ relationships with students Strong positive relationships with students formed an important background against which effective teaching occurred.

Success was defined as having students in the top 1 per cent of the candidates for HSC courses (subjects often have several levels of difficulty and we looked at all courses, including lower level/ability courses). We then used a variety of statistical ‘filters’ to eliminate variables other than the teacher as the cause for this success. We did this as follows: by comparing results achieved by other teachers with the same students at the same school; external comparisons within a course, especially for courses like languages with small numbers sitting the HSC; additional controls for academic selectivity (some secondary schools in NSW are academically selective with potential students undertaking a competitive examination at the end of Year 6 – these schools would be expected to achieve high results) and socio-economic status through comparing ‘like with like’ schools; observing the clustering of results over the time period, and considering who was teaching these classes in different years.
