Also at the University of British Columbia, Ada Smailbegovic and then Scott Innis were both tirelessly cheerful and thoroughly careful research and editorial assistants to whom I owe much: without them this project could not have been brought even close to completion in the time allotted. Ken Hooper, archivist at Bakersfield High School, set his class to work tracking down Duncan materials in school records and publications and was generous with both materials and energies; Pauline Butling and Fred Wah both unstintingly shared letters and papers from their respective archives and helpfully recalled their experiences editing and publishing the first edition of Writing Writing.

With the exception of the poems from his first book, Heavenly City, Earthly City (long out of print and prohibitively expensive), and two poems (“An African Elegy” and “King Haydn of Miami Beach”) from Selected Poems (another scarce and expensive book), not only had none of the twenty-nine remaining poems it collects ever appeared in a collection before, but—more to the point—the book is Duncan’s careful attempt to restore to the canon of his work poems on which he had hitherto turned his back, to all intents and purposes renouncing them.

The only reason for greater articulation is to set words, phrases, breath groups, lines into a more complex movement.  . ”32 As an articulation of distinct words, then, the poem should be jointed or joined, as a skeleton might be intelligibly sequenced. 35 Duncan adopted themes, materials, and strategies ahead of time in this long meditation and exploration of contrasts and personal conf licts arising from the jealous rage and shock of a lover’s betrayal. ”36 Structured overall after Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements (with an added coda), the poem contrasts the contemporary world of his own experience (his failed love affair, his correspondence, the city of Berkeley, and so forth) with worlds of which he has only indirect experience: lantern slides of Venice, a photograph of the Venus of Lespuges, historical and art historical accounts of Byzantium, Shakespeare’s Othello, and so on.
