This ebook exhibits that the serious query compelled on Simplicius used to be no matter if his school’s popularity of Ptolemy’s planetary hypotheses entailed a rejection of Aristotle’s argument that the heavens are made from a distinct subject that strikes via nature in a circle in regards to the middle of the cosmos and, therefore, a repudiation of the thesis that the cosmos is uncreated and eternal.

Surprisingly, however, this defense against Philoponus’ heresy broaches in turn another heresy of its own, one far more radical than anything envisaged by Philoponus—the idea that none of the current astronomical theories or hypotheses is adequate and that what is yet to be expounded is a physical theory identifying and explaining the real planetary motions. I will return to this ‘heresy’ in the following chapters, where I suggest reasons why Simplicius is content to raise it and then to leave it without direct comment.
