These two poems, "Love by ambition" and "From the very first coming down," are written in a voice that is essentially private. But there is a "public" voice to poems that Auden was writing at pretty much the same time. " It is a kind of "blues," imitative, Edward Mendelson suggests, of Sophie Tucker, and certainly familiar enough as a type of complaint. " The language of the poem involves none of the elliptical tricks, grammatical ambiguities, short circuits of syntax that so mark the "private" poems.

Their ways were suited to an agricultural land But lending on interest they did not understand. Luther and Calvin put in a word The god of your priests, they said, is absurd.
