Sommerfeld studierte Mathematik und Mineralogie in Königsberg und Göttingen und wurde in Göttingen Assistent von Felix Klein. Er erhielt Professuren an der Bergakademie in Clausthal, an der Technischen Hochschule in Aachen und schließlich als Nachfolger Ludwig Boltzmanns an der Universität München. Zu Sommerfelds wichtigsten Arbeiten zählen seine Beiträge zur frühen Quantenphysik - sein Werk "Atombau und Spektrallinien" faßt in seinen verschiedenen Auflagen das jeweils bekannte Wissen zusammen - sowie seine Anwendungen der Quantentheorie auf die Metallphysik.Prägend für die weitere Entwicklung der Physik wurde Sommerfeld vor allem durch seine Lehrtätigkeit und seine Münchener Schule, aus der neben anderen Debye, von Laue, Pauli, Heisenberg, Behte und Peierls hervorgingen. Seine "Vorlesungen über Theoretische Physik" können noch heute zum Studium verwendet werden.
